6 Facts About Windows 10 Pro Upgrades
Updated: Feb 12
In light of the Windows 7 January 14, 2020
End-of-Life expiration date, many of our clients have been inquiring about Windows 10 upgrades and how they can do them successfully without breaking the bank. Below is some helpful advice about what you should do.
1. Is the Windows 10 Pro free upgrade offer still available?
The Windows 10 free upgrade from Microsoft ended on July 29, 2016. Today, you can purchase and download Windows 10 Pro on your computer.
2. How do I get Windows 10 Pro?
Windows 10 Pro is available for purchase from the Microsoft website.
3. What is the cost to upgrade to a Windows 10 Pro license?
Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro = $199
Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro = $99
4. Replace vs. Upgrade?
If your computer is more than three years old, you should consider upgrading to a new computer. Newer computers are faster and more powerful and already have Windows 10 Pro installed!
5. Do I still qualify for the free upgrade offer if I've already downloaded Windows 10 to a USB drive, but haven't yet upgraded my device?
According to Microsoft, all upgrades must have completed and reached the "Welcome" screen by 11:59 PM UTC-10 (Hawaii) on July 29, 2016.
6. Can I use the same Windows 10 Pro product key twice?
Yes, technically you can use the same product key to install Windows on as many computers as you want—one hundred, one thousand...go for it. However (and this is a big one), it's not legal and you will not be able to activate Windows 10 Pro on more than one computer at a time.
Trying to save money by installing the same product key on multiple computers may seem like the financially prudent thing to do, but it may get you audited. And attempting to do it after the July 29, 2016 free upgrade deadline may too. Not to mention that upgrading computers over three years old may cost your company more (money, time, resources, data) in the long run.
